OpenStack is one of the big names in Open Source solutions for software-defined computer centers, also known as “private clouds”. Many companies have extended their product range to provide either their own adoption of the software, or to at least allow to integrate i. e. their hypervisor solution into OpenStack-controlled environments.
While OpenStack and its derivatives is mostly seen as a self-service solution, to enable your (likely internal) customers to create, use and release computing and storage resources within their predefined limits, our initial contact with this software suite was rather different: We were looking for a generic solution for the “media break” in server provisioning work-flows, extending the possibilities of our existing IT operations automation solutions.
